How to comply with AI content disclosure law
To comply with AI-content disclosure law, declare the AI systems your site uses in a machine-readable file, show the notices and labels the law requires on your pages, and keep dated proof that they were displayed. The EU AI Act (Article 50) and California SB 942 make this enforceable on 2 August 2026, and China, South Korea, Italy, and India already require it.
Three steps to a compliant site
- Declare. Publish an
ai-disclosure.jsonmanifest at your domain that lists each AI system you operate, its role, and how you disclose it. This is conformance Level 1 Declared. - Render. Show the disclosures on the page: an interaction notice for AI chat, visible labels on AI-generated media, and machine-readable markers in the file. This is Level 2 Rendered.
- Evidence. Keep dated, verifiable records that the disclosures were live, so you can demonstrate compliance for a past date. This is Level 3 Evidenced.
What each jurisdiction requires
The specific duty depends on where your users are and what AI you use. The EU AI Act covers AI interaction, synthetic-media marking, emotion and biometric notices, and deepfake labeling. California SB 942 covers AI-generated image, video, and audio from large providers. China, South Korea, Italy, and India have their own labeling duties in force today. What does AI disclosure law require?
Most AI-disclosure laws require two things: telling people when they are interacting with AI, and labeling AI-generated media so it can be recognized by people and by machines. Some regimes add a duty to keep records.
When do the EU AI Act and California SB 942 apply?
Both become enforceable on 2 August 2026. The EU AI Act Article 50 binds providers and deployers on the EU market; California SB 942 binds large generative-AI providers with more than 1,000,000 monthly California users.
